The credit file freeze is now national!
Starting in October, consumers from all 50 states now have a new tool to protect themselves from identity theft from at least two of the three national credit repositories. TransUnion first, and then Equifax shortly after, announced that consumers can opt into a program that will allow them to place a security freeze on their credit file regardless of the state they live in.
Credit file freezing prohibits a creditor from being able to access a consumer’s credit report to open a new account without a consumer selected PIN to unfreeze the file.
The process is like locking your credit report away from use, and you are the only one with the key.
This will let you select who will be allowed to use that key for access to your credit file…
I personally feel that if you are not planning on applying for any mortgage, auto, or any other type of credit in the near future. You all should put a "Credit Freeze" immediatly and protect yourself.
