Tomorrow is October 15th. Read this tonight.

Liz and I just got back from Monterey.
We went up to visit our son, Andrew. He’s part of our team here at Tax Debt Consultants, so between the family time we got some real work done too.
Then we got home.
And the phone was ringing.
It’s the night before the October 15th extension deadline, and the calls haven’t stopped.
“Can you do my return?”
“Can you squeeze me in?”
“I’ve been meaning to call you since April.”
I saw a post today from a fellow tax pro that said it better than I could.
Your tax professional can be your advisor. Your consultant. Your bookkeeper. Even your legal counsel.
But we will not be your babysitter.
That one stuck with me.
Because after years of doing IRS and California FTB collections work, I can tell you the people who get out of tax trouble have one thing in common. It isn’t money. It isn’t luck. It’s that at some point, they stopped waiting for someone else to make the call.
They took ownership.
Here’s what most people don’t realize about tomorrow:
The extension was never extra time to pay. It was extra time to file. Interest on any unpaid balance has been running since April 15th.
Missing the extended deadline doesn’t just start a new penalty clock. The failure-to-file penalty is figured from the original April due date, at 5% per month on the unpaid tax, up to 25%.
The failure-to-file penalty is roughly ten times the failure-to-pay penalty. Filing on time, even if you can’t pay, is one of the cheapest moves you can make.
California runs its own clock. The FTB has its own penalties and interest, and it does not wait for the IRS.
An unfiled return is the IRS’s favorite opening. They can prepare a substitute return for you, with no deductions in your favor, and start collecting on that number.
Now here’s the part nobody wants to hear.
Every month you put this off, the bill gets bigger. Interest compounds daily. Penalties stack. And the options open to you today, like installment agreements, penalty relief, or settlement, get harder to reach the longer you sit on unfiled years.
Waiting is not neutral. Waiting is the most expensive choice on the table.
So here’s my ask.
If you’ve got a return due tomorrow, file it. Even if you owe and can’t pay. Get it in.
If you’re already behind, with unfiled years, IRS letters stacking up, or a balance you’ve been avoiding, call my office at 909-570-1103 or book appointment CallTaxEA.com
We’ll diagnose where you actually stand first, then build the plan to get you out.
I’ll be your detective. Your strategist. Your advocate with the IRS and the FTB.
But you have to make the call.
