Last September I put this week on the calendar and locked it shut.
No client calls. No strategy sessions. No notifications at midnight.
Because my daughter Bella is a Coast Guard Academy cadet, her schedule belongs to the federal government now, and the windows to be together don’t appear on their own. You plan them or you miss them.
So we went to Puerto Rico. Bella, Liz, her teammates, a small group of people we love. First week of March. Done.
Here’s what March means in the tax world though.
Tax season is already grinding. IRS deadlines are stacking up. And the people who got a notice in January and told themselves they’d deal with it after the holidays are now telling themselves they’ll deal with it after tax season.
After tax season becomes after summer.
After summer becomes “I can’t believe it’s been a year.”
I watched the ocean from Puerto Rico this week and thought about those people. Not to judge them. Because I was one of them for eight years.
The delay never feels like a decision. It just feels like waiting. Until the day the IRS stops waiting with you.
I’m back at my desk on Monday. If you’ve been waiting, your window is right now.
